Lady Wortly Montagu a great woman, Emanuel Timoni, a Greek physician who also attended the Wortley Montagues, had also described the procedure a few years earlier. Dr. Timoni first described this procedure in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1714. James Pylarini described it again in the Transactions in 1716. They called it variolation (varus is Latin for pimple) or inoculation (inoculare means to graft)

Manchester was Governor of Jamaica from 1808 to 1827, and prepared the colony for the emancipation of slaves. In 1815 he dealt with the aftermath of destruction of Port Royal by fire and of the plantations by a hurricane. Manchester Parish in Jamaica was named after him, while the capital of Mandeville was named after his son, Viscount Mandeville.[3]

The 9th Duke of Manchester was born in Kimbelton, Ireland, on the 3 March 1877. He died in Seaford, Essex, on the 9 February 1947. During his lifetime he was known as the Lord Kimbolton from 1877 to 1890 and from 1890 until 1892 as the Viscount Mandeville. The Lord Kimbolton was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Following his accession to the Dukedom, his Grace took the Liberal whip in the House of Lords eventually becoming Deputy Chief Whip. His Grace also became a Captain in the Lancashire Fusiliers.

George Montagu, 4th Duke of Manchester Held the office of Lord Chamberlain between 1782 and 1783.1 He held the office of Ambassador to France between April 1783 and December 1783.1
